Der NMEA Standard, ein Kommunikation Standard, der durch die NMEA Organisation definiert wird, definiert ein Kommunikationsprotokoll, das NMEA-0183 genannt wird, der Navigationsinstrumente aktiviert, um Daten miteinander auszutauschen. Ein Kompass kann zum Beispiel Daten des Kurses zu einem Radar schicken, um eine Norden-oben Bildschirmanzeige zu aktivieren. Und ein GPS kann Standort-, Richtungs- und Wegstreck-Informationen zu einer automatischen Kurssteuerung (Autopiloten) schicken, um einen programmierten Kurs zu steuern.
Talkers und Zuhörer
Kommunikation mit dem Protokoll NMEA-0183 bezieht mindestens ein Instrument, das Daten sendet und ein anderes, das Daten empfängt, mit ein. Von den beiden Geräten wird ein Instrument, das Daten sendet,Talker genannt, während ein Instrument, das Daten empfängt,, Zuhörer genannt wird. Fig.1 zeigt solch ein System.
